September is HeartKids Month at Badgelink

For every badge sold in September we will donate 50c to HeartKids

Why...

On September 16th 2009 the owners of Badgelink, Chris and Rowena brought a very special kid into the world, Harper Andy Blewitt, who was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) which is easier explained by saying he was born with half a heart.

Harper Andy Blewitt - now 11 months old

6 hours after he was born the surgeons at the Royal Children's Hospital operated to save his life.  3 months later they, again, had to perform an operation to rewire the veins and arteries in and around his heart.  Harper also had a chest infection after both operations and required a further 2 operations.

Harper will need a third operation when he is around 4 years of age which is a bypass operation (common with adults who have a heart attack), where the blood is redirected to his lungs before going into his heart to ease the pressure and hopefully give the hard working right side of his heart more life.

There are approximately 40 babies born with HLHS every year and through research, development, dedicated surgeons, nurses and staff most babies with this condition survive.

In our stay in hospital we had absolutely amazing support through not only the Royal Children's Hospital staff, but also HeartKids.  They were always there for a chat and support in every way.  They knew exactly what we were going through and put us in contact with other families going through the same thing.  We were required to go back into hospital on Christmas Day and stayed right through till the 3rd of January.  It wasn't the best place to spend the Christmas period, but over this time we felt so much love and support.  Although it was a joy to finally leave the hospital, it was sad to be leaving some good people behind.

We had spent months after leaving hospital just trying to be normal, not really thinking about our time in hospital and Harper's condition.... BUT, going back there months later we realised there were still plenty of sick kids waiting for operations and plenty of families turning their life upside down and doing anything they can do to get through it.  HeartKids were still there!

And that's why we are giving 50c to HeartKids for every badge sold.  It's our way of saying thank you and we hope that in years to come we can continue to give to this wonderful organisation.
